Obituary of Rev. Victor Ivers

Rev. Victor J. Ivers, a priest for 69 years (1945-2014), died on 18 Jan 2014 while residing at St. Benedict's Nursing & Rehab Center in Niles, IL. He was born in Chicago in 1918 to Steve and Frances (Strnadel) Ivisich. He was preceded in death by his sister Marian Brodarick and his brother John Ivers. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Fr. Ivers attended St. Theodore Grade School on Chicago's South Side and graduated from Quigley Seminary High School in 1939, then spent 6 years at the major Seminary in Mundelein. On 24 Feb.
1945 he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Bernard Sheil. In May of 1945, he was assigned to Nativity Parish in Joliet and served there until May of 1948 when he was assigned to Holy Rosary Parish in the Pullman area of Chicago. In Feb. of 1951, Fr. Ivers began his 30 year career as a US Navy Chaplain. He served in the Navy until 1981. He was stationed on 3 aircraft carriers, 1 submarine and 1 cruiser. He was land-based at Great Lakes Navy Station for 3 years, in San Diego for 7 years, on Guam for 2 years, in Korea for 2 years, at Pearl Harbor for 2 years, and in the southern states for 7 years. He also served with the US Marines in Korea and Vietnam and was on the faculty of the Chaplain's School at
Newport, Rhode Island for 3 years. When Fr. Ivers returned to the Chicago Archdiocese in 1982, he served at St. Mary's in Lake Forest for 2 1/2 years, then on to Immaculate Conception Parish in Waukegan for 3 years. From 1987-2007, while in retirement he resided at St. Joseph Parish where he was actively involved in the life of the parish. In Feb. of 2007 he transferred to St. Benedict's Nursing Home and Rehab Center.
Fr. Ivers will lie in state at St. Joseph Church, 121 E. Maple Ave., Libertyville from 3:30-7:30 pm on Friday, Jan. 24. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Jan. 25 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph Church, Libertyville. His interment will be at Ascension Cemetery.
