I am sad that I discovered only this week that Captain (Father) Victor Ivers (USN-Ret) passed away about 2 years ago at age 96. Father W. Killian (CDR-USN) inspired me yesterday to check to th status of Father Ivers. When I told BMC Joe Triolo (USN-Ret) yesterday, Joe told me that he knew Father Ivers very well as Joe had attended masses by Father Ivers in San Diego and Lake County (IL); also Father Ivers had done a Marriage-Ceremony for Joe and his wife (Kate). Joe and I are sorry that we did not attend the Funeral for Father Ivers. I attended several of Father Ivers masses with my wife and our 3 sons at the St. Joseph Church in Libertyville (IL) in the 1980s. I spoke to Father Ivers on the phone a few years ago. John O'Gorden, Libertyville (IL).

I am saddened to read that Father Ivers passed away - he passed on my birthday in fact! He was my counselor in Guam when I was 19 years old, and he made a big impact on my life in many "small" ways. We were pen pals for many many years afterwards. I hope he will stay close to me and to those who loved him in spirit, as he had a special warmth and a down-to-earth manner that the world needed, and still needs. God bless you Father Ivers.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Father Ivers's passing. We were honored to be his friend. Father Ivers represented the very best of priesthood. He was consumed with compassion, sincerity, and love of God. His many acts of kindness and religious direction provided to the parishioners were immeasurable. We particularly enjoyed the stories he would tell about his many experiences while serving in the U.S. Navy as a Chaplin. He will always be remembered for taking snapshots with his camera and sharing the pictures later with the people in the photo. His earthly life was an inspiration to all who knew him. We are forever grateful for his spiritual influence to our life. May his soul rest in peace. "God Bless you Father Ivers." Much love, Don and Nancy Logsdon

Fr. Ivers was truly a gift from God to our family. Through his words and actions, we were shown the face of God's love. He inspired us to be the best Catholics we could be. He loved us through our failings, challenged us to learn more, love more, try harder! He was always such a "giver" of himself, to everyone he met. I hope he is enjoying some time with my mom, his "Apple Dumpling" where they can share their reward for lives well lived. We love you Father Vic!! Can't wait to be with you again when it is our time to transition to the other side.

Father Ivers was a blessing for all at St. Joseph Grade School. Although I graduated St. Joes over 7 years ago, my memories with Father Ivers always bring a smile to my face. I first met Father Ivers when he came to visit my class. Just his presence brought smiles to all of our faces, and his sense of humor was something everyone could understand. He would always end by walking out and yelling "Hail Christian Soldiers." I got to know Father Ivers better though through my experiences as an alter server and in stamp club. After I served a mass, Father Ivers came up to me and told me that I needed to pay attention to how I was folding my hands when alter serving. He said that my fingers all should be pointing to heaven and to the sky, not towards the ground. This little critique is still instilled in my brain to this day. My days in stamp club certainly wouldn't have been the same without him either...in fact I probably wouldn't have even started that childhood hobby. On multiple instanced he pulled me aside showing me a special stamp that he saved for me, or buying me a book to collect all of my stamps in. He was truly a special person that put a smile on my face in many ways. God bless him!

We fondly remember Father Ivers visiting our religious education classes as teens at St. Joseph's Parish, and we both enjoyed getting to know him more as adults. He was such a warm, kindhearted man, and we will miss him. We were blessed to have know him; may he rest in peace.

What a role model he was. From the time I met Vic at the Chaplains' School until his retirement he was a leader among the Catholic chaplains and all chaplains but especially those from Chicago. He will continue to stir eternity, never will he REST in peace. The Lord has a new candidate for an EA.

Father Ivers was extremely supportive to our family. He performed Steve's first marriage ceremony to Amy Ekovich, as well as her funeral mass. She left this world way too prematurely, and Steve was left and blessed to raised their two children, Abigail and Drew, ages 3 1/2 and 6 months old respectively.
I met Steve, Abigail, and Drew a year later and we married and became a family a few years after that. Father Ivers counseled and supported us during this transition. Thank you Father! 17 years later we are still going strong and thriving!
God Bless You and May You Rest in Peace.
Love,
The Cummins Family

I met Father Ivers in the physical therapy room at St. Benedict"s when my very discouraged father was sitting on a cycling machine. He wheeled over without hesitation, witnessing the sadness on my father's face and the hurt in my heart, as I attempted to help put Dad together again. Father Ivers was pale and thin, yet took the time to introduce himself and start a friendship with my family. He was a light, as I navigated the perilous waves of end of life issues. In his unassuming, non-preachy, simple and genuine manner, Father Ivers entered our lives and
continued to minister. I fooled myself as I would stop in his room at the end of my visits with my parents: I thought I was helping him, but in truth, he provided comfort to me as he always offered his reading material to me, leaving envelopes with copied articles, with "You will like this, Roseor, we'll talk about this later, okay?" in the margins. Father Ivers, I will never stop needing your warmth, your humbleness, your energy. There is an error in the death notice as it mentions only that in February of 2007, "he transferred to St. Benedict's". No, it was at St. Benedict's that you still sheltered every individual that you met and you shared every last measure. Godspeed, my friend, you were Christ's hands on earth. Words cannot express your goodness. Love, Rose

Our entire family felt sorrow at the new of Fr. Ivers death. He was a powerful influence through the formative years of our 5 children. Whether training the boys to be the best possible altar boy you could be, teaching them to fish, or organizing a stamp collecting club, Fr.ivers would always model love of God, kindness and fair play. He taught all of us about the importance of faith and keeping the Lord as a major part of our lives! He was definitely a bright light in the Chicago archdiocese during so many dark years! We were blessed to have this good, good man and exemplary priest as our friend! Fr. Ivers, your lessons will live on in all of us! May you rest in peace!

In the 8 years I spent at St Joseph's School, I have never met a man more influential to its students or a more compassionate one. We were all so excited when he would stop by our classrooms for a surprise visit. We all silently cheered from our seats when we saw he was the priest that was saying mass for that particular day. He made religion relatable and fun when we were young children. I was lucky enough to have become one of the first female alter servers at St Joes and Father Ivers was the one who fought for us and stood behind our cause. What a wonderful legacy he has left within the school and the parish. I will never forget him. - Jill Soyka Mack, Class of 1995

Fr. Ivers (or as I called him, a walking Angel), affected many boys and girls of St. Joseph's. He affected my son Sean. I believe Sean is a better person for having know Fr.Ivers. Threw his instruction of altar serving, using pet names such as "Meatball" for the guys, he was able to break the barrier and cross over into their world. He will surely be missed.

Fr Ivers is the greatest priest I have ever known. He was so full of love and generosity. No matter how busy he was, he had a way about him that made you feel like you were important to him and that he loved you unconditionally. He used every opportunity to educate you about the faith, sharing funny anecdotes or insightful historical facts to help you learn. As a constant reader, he had a wealth of knowledge that he freely and humbly shared. And he was never afraid to challenge you to be a better peson and to reach out to others. I am so thankful to God to have allowed me the chance to have known Fr. Ivers. Thank you Fr. Ivers for your love and friendship. Thank you for helping me celebrate my marriage, for baptizing my firstborn son, for blessing my home, and for just being a friend. You will be remembered always. I look forward to seeing you again in the future (God willing!). I am 100% confident that you are in heaven my dear friend. Pray for us!

It is with the deepest of sympathies that we send our condolences to Father Ivers family. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He touched our family in so many ways, from translating letters for me to Croatian, so I could send family information and happenings to relatives in Croatia; to coming to the hospital and blessing me when I was so critically ill and almost died. Every day he would call me, while I was in the hospital to see how I was doing. When our children attended St . Joseph School he was always pleasant and engaging with all the children.
He was a dear friend, a compassionate person ,who touched us all deeply. He will truly be missed . I cherish the photo we have of him and it rests under our statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where it will remain along with our prayers. With deepest sympathy, Les, Jane , Mary, Megan, Courtney and Ryan Sturgeon
