Kay, Paul, Thomas and Daniel, please accept the condolences of the Troopers of the 11th Armored Cavalry's Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia. Your husband (and father) was a dedicated and courageous warrior, one of us, one of our own. He served honorably in C Troop in 1969 with the Legendary Blackhorse Regiment as the regiment deployed across much of Vietnam. One of the most respected troopers, he was revered as an intrepid leader who inspired bravery and gallantry among his fellow soldiers. Fred Yates’s name will be published in our newsletter, Thunder Run, acknowledged solemnly during the Memorial Service at our annual reunion, this year in Grand Rapids, and enrolled on the scroll of our honored dead. As grateful Americans, we pause and salute a brave man who never ceased to serve his fellow warriors and was willing to sacrifice, and even put his life on the line for his country, his family and his fellow man. Chaplain Bill Karabinos (11th ACVVC).

I will never forget the adventures we shared as kids and as college roommates. We lost touch for about 30 years but resumed our friendship like not a day had passed. You always shared your financial advice and fishing stories. You were so proud of your family and your pride and love shined through every conversation, text message and email. You were a patriot. Thank you for your service to our great nation. I will miss you my friend but I will never forget our adventures and our friendship.

Fred was a special man. A man of God, set apart, useful to the Master.
His encouragement, strength & love for God was an ongoing example to me.
“This I declare about the Lord; He alone is my refuge,
my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust Him.”
Ps 91:2

Deepest sympathy and prayers.
I got to know Fred only breifly through Wend morning men's group in recent years.
He shared his testimony last year and it had a profound impact on my faith journey. I cant recall the exact words but he said something like, "Jesus has shown me enough to know he exists and that his love is greater than anything in this world. He doesn't need to show me anything more."
It helped me realized how blessed I am and how I also needed to acknowledge the same.
Fred was a special person who carried the light with him through his incredible testimony. May the peace and comfort of Christ be with you in this difficult time.
"I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!"
Job 19:25, 27 NIV

As we travel through life, people come into our friendship circle who really make a difference for us. That was my friend "Fred" who I met in my later years while working the rummage sales at our church. His enjoyment of anything antique, fishing gear or tool related was his delight. For many years we would help one another with home and garden projects, enjoying each minute.
In his earlier years Fred literally gave his physical heart for our country. More importantly Fred had previously given his spiritual heart to His Lord. I give thanks for my God chosen friend Fred and his family, and wait for the day when we are united again for eternity. Lee Bomgaars
