The Chicago Java Users Group ( https://www.meetup.com/ChicagoJUG/) would like to send our condolences to Paul's family. Paul joined the Chicago JUG in March 2016. We benefitted so much from Paul's expert knowledge in the Java Virtual Machine. Paul accepted our invitation to join the board in 2020 and served until the end of 2021. He presented several times at our meetup group, and here are a few tributes we have of Paul in our YouTube channel:
In Memoriam of Paul: https://youtu.be/TG3SAgcURFQ
A 20-min lightning talk by Paul (December 2016): https://youtu.be/O5F5Ubhn37A
A 90-min presentation with Q&A by Paul (February 2017) teaching us how to build a better JVM: https://youtu.be/wq96_vLAV7A
May the soul of Paul rest in peace with our Heavenly Father.

I knew Paul from sitting in front of him in several classes. Later I would meet Steve through my boy friend now husband Dave. It is a small world. I truly have fond memories of hanging out with Paul before and after classes.

There are no words, Claudia, please know that if you need anything from me or just a heart that has been through what you are going through now you can contact me day or night, now or in the weeks, months, and years to come. I've loved my cousin Paul for years and still in shock that he is gone. Please lean on your family and friends. You can't do this alone and need their love and support. Hang tough, girl, you will be ok. Love you all,
Carla

I had the great fortune to work with Paul at Azul for over five years. Paul was a team player, always ready to help, jovial and yet professional. When I shared the sad news with the company, I was flooded with messages from colleagues telling me how saddened they were and how wonderful it had been to work with him. A recurrent theme was his remarkable intelligence, kindness, and patience. Paul was the best employee in his role, yet carried his skills with modesty. It was a pleasure to work with him. He will be missed.

I am very fortunate to have known Paul and Claudia Johnson Nauman for 42 years. I am so happy for Claudia and Paul that Paul was able to invest in his faith as a Colson Fellow, and for the difference that made for his influence upon those around him, including me. Paul and I met spring semester of 1980 studying abroad in Salzburg, Austria. Two students were paired up and lived in an Austrian home with local families. Once we had arrived at the house where we would spend the next four months, I called Claudia Johnson and asked if she and Patricia Curtain would like to go ice skating with Paul and I. That was, I believe, Paul and Claudia’s first social outing together. So began 42 years for Claudia and Paul.
I met lots of people in the Salzburg program, but I stayed friends with Paul and Claudia. We traveled together to the east coast, we went skiing in the Upper Peninsula, and always had adventures. Paul took skydiving lessons and told me that the adrenaline rush from stepping out of an airplane, once having landed safely on the ground, provided a sense of complete euphoria. I came to Chicago, and we went skydiving.
Paul and I shared another adventure which solidified our friendship across the decades, the path of Christian Fellowship. Paul and Claudia joined Libertyville Covenant Church, and I am very active with Grace Presbyterian Church in Las Vegas. The things we talked about changed over the years,, discussions regarding his travels to alleviate poverty in Mexico, and my work with the homeless in Las Vegas. Most recently we have been discussing his work writing a book, a Christian allegory like Les Miserable, by Victor Hugo.
Yet my memories return to he and I sitting out on the curb, looking up at the sky and just talking about the things that meant something to us. It is that vision of an endless sky that I want to focus on, here today. In Romans 8:18, Paul tells us “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” The time I had here on earth with my friend was not as much as I would want, but it was enough to prove that our lives are connected, and that we will reconnect with joy in the life hereafter.
Paul Nauman was my friend! I feel so fortunate to the able to say that. Remembering our times together will always bring a smile to my face. Paul Nauman and I have been friends for 42 years, and the time is just beginning through our common fellowship and faith. Amen.
