Dear Grandpa - When I think of you, I always think of the joy you brought to our family. You were so quick to make a joke and effortlessly change the mood in any room. You'd even tell me stories about waking up in the middle of the night and making yourself laugh so hard in bed about a joke you had thought of. Getting to spend so much time with you in my adulthood was an honor and a privilege. In that time I learned how much you loved to connect with other people through laughter and music. You had a beautiful influence on the world and had an amazing ability to bring joy and laughter wherever you went. I will be forever grateful to have had you as my Grandfather.
Love, Erin

Grandpa had a huge and rich storehouse of humor, which he constantly shared with family and everyone he met. Our lives were warmer for it. We are all lucky and glad he spent so much time " in our neighborhood".

Dear Grandpa,
This candle is being lit to honor your spirit. It is to thank you for the happy and loving energy you brought to everyone: family, friends, anyone you met. You showed me that joy is possible in every situation. How wise and simple a lesson. You will bring laughter to people even after you've crossed over!
Love,
Michael

We considered knowing Gene a blessing. When we did get to see him at your place it was always a cheery visit. He was an "up" person and made those of us around him "up" too. He seemed to love life and people and had fun doing it. 96 years was a good long life and now he is in a better place. We shall pray for him and you and the family.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. Today is the feast of St. Joachim and Anne and what a day for them to meet together on this feastday. God does things in mysterious ways and unites people in a loving way. May God give you the comfort and peace you wish for. A Mass will be offered for Eugene by Fr. Dan McLaughlin, MM in Brazil.

Our Uncle Gene was quite the guy! My brother, Tom, and sister, Julie, lived with our Mom (his sister) and Grandma (his mother) in Chicago when we were very young. Uncle Gene would come by on Sundays and have dinner with us once in awhile and we thought that was pretty special. He worked for Monarch Laundry during those years and I remember seeing him lug big white bags of laundry up and down the many flights of stairs in our apartment building. He once told me that the doctors believed all that physical activity contributed to the good health he enjoyed in his later years. Blessed with the music gene, he could entertain at the drop of a hat by pulling a harmonica or a top out of his pocket. One of those harmonicas was about two inches long, and boy could he make that thing rock! One of his favorite songs was "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and today when I was talking about him to a co-worker, guess what song came over the airwaves...you guessed it, "Dream a Little Dream of Me." So I will do just that and close by saying I will miss seeing him, laughing at all his jokes, and hearing his stories. Carol Sutor

Our Uncle Gene was certainly a light in our lives. He was always full of fun, loved his harmonica and had many jokes to tell throughout our lives. Always fit and trim and full of energy. He always had a smile and was delighted to see everyone. We will miss him very much but what a great life he had for all of his 96 wonderful years! Our mother, his sister Dorothy, thought he was the best little brother a girl could ever have. Our love goes with him always. Julie & Tony Johnson

Grandpa,
Thank you for your example on how to live life well. That example was illuminated with a famed sense of humor, engaging kindness, love for family, endless youth, a mesmerizing catalog of adventure, and the gift of being able to say anything to anyone and have them love you for it.
I will cherish every moment, lesson, laugh, and tale.
Be bold. Take your chances. Love greatly. Bring joy with you, everywhere. And, if you value it, shine it!
With the deepest love and pride,
Kevin

Mr. Nichols, I have two of the most wonderful gifts; I was a very young girl when I met you, you were my first gift and second you have a wonderful daughter whom I grew up with, two of the most great gifts in my life. You were always kind to me and you were funny many times, you made me laugh, I really was always fascinated when you brought out your old wooden top, I could never figure out how you spun that top, you did it so well, no-one could "top" your talent including your harmonica playing. You always made time to share your talents with us all.
I'm so happy to have known you and your wonderful family.

We will always remember Gene for his wonderful sense of humor. He always had a joke and a warm smile. And the many Christmas dinners that we shared together. He was a very gentle and giving man who loved his family dearly.
