Obituary of Charles E. Morris, Jr.
MORRIS, Charles E. Jr., 84, died July 12th 2018. Eldest son of the late Charles E. Morris and the late Marie Koenig Morris. Brother of Robert N., Jerome W., and the late William F. Morris. Husband for 59 years of Rosemary Geary Morris. Father of the late Cathleen M. and Michael J., Patrick B. and Charles E. III Morris. Seven granddaughters, one great-grandson. Born May 9, 1934 in Chicago. Graduated St. George high school Evanston, Il 1951. Graduated BA degree St. Mary’s College, Winona, MN 1955. Enlisted U. S. Naval Reserve as seaman recruit in 1952, commissioned officer in 1955. Served as executive officer and navigator on a salvage ship, gun fire control officer on a heavy cruiser. Returned to Ready Reserve in 1961 and pursued parallel military and civilian careers, commanding three different naval reserve units in Chicago and Great Lakes IL, retiring in 1976 as Commander USNR after 24 years of service. In business life he worked as a supermarket manager for a major grocery chain, as midwest editor for Chain Store Age magazine, and as a public relations executive for a food-packaging manufacturer, an advertising agency and a public relations agency. He served on the board of directors and as program chairman of the Publicity Club of Chicago, and for 30 years in several positions, including president, of The Villa Improvement League, Chicago’s oldest community association, where he helped The Villa achieve recognition as a National Historic District and Chicago Landmark Neighborhood. He managed a youth baseball team in the Kilbourn Park Athletic Association. In 1979 he joined Chilton Co. as midwest editor of Food Engineering magazine, where he reported on the latest food manufacturing facilities and technologies across the US. He twice won the Jesse H. Neal Award from the American Business Press Association for excellence in business journalism. He was a member of the Institute of Food Technologists, served on the board of directors, food branch, of the Food & Drug Law Institute, and retired from Food Engineering as senior editor in 2003.
Visitation 8:30 AM -10:00 AM followed by Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM Tuesday July 17th at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church, Hunt Club Road and Gages Lake Road, Gurnee.
