Dear Diane & Family,
I am deeply saddened by the loss of your beloved husband and father. I had the pleasure of meeting him some years ago through a friend of Marytown, and was encouraged by his strong faith and devotion to his family. In my dealings with David, he was always a very humble, patient man. I can remember on one occasion asking his advice on raising daughters, given his experience of being 12 years my senior and a level of faith that i respected. On another occasion, i.e., on the steps of Marytown, it was a privilege and gift from God to meet him and your son whose life was spared in the twin towers, thorough the grace of Our Blessed Lord, and to see the joy in your husband's eyes as they shared with me a glimpse of what took place that horrific day in New York.
Diane, it was a pleasure meeting you several years ago, and to witness your strength, patience and hope in response to a recent trial God allowed in your family. You were a source of strength to me.
I was looking forward to seeing David again at Marytown after a number of empty years, but it was not to be, as we always seemed to visit Our Lord at different times. But spiritually, we were no doubt united.
So sad to have missed the services, but please accept my poor prayers for the repose of David's soul, beginning with tonight's Holy Rosary, Masses and Holy Hours on Sunday mornings. May the prayers of all your family and friends be a source of grace and comfort in the days ahead.
I'll never forget the words of Fr. John A. Hardon, SJ, may God rest his soul... something like, "The only reason God allows trials in our lives is so that we may need Him; so that we may love Him and seek him out. If He never allowed any trials or tragedies in our lives, who would ever need Him?"
... and the words of Fr. Corapi in the talk that was recorded by Lighthouse Catholic Media on one Good Friday, subject matter why does God allow bad things to happen to good people, and what is the meaning of suffering? As he heard confessions hour after hour on retreat for people with the saddest experiences, one after another with a worse or more tragic story than the previous one, Father's answer was always the same. "We are part of Christ's Body. If He suffered, we must suffer. There is no other way... There can be no Resurrection without the cross."
May Almighty God bless your family and Our Loving Mother keep you forever in her maternal care...

Dear Diane and Family, We are praying for your whole family and feeling the loss of a beloved brother in Christ. Such a devout and loving husband, father and grandfather! A favorite memory is hearing how he would "cut the rug" and dance with his beautiful bride Diane in their home. We will miss him here on earth but look forward to an even more joyous reunion in heaven. God bless you all. You will in our prayers! Kevin and Crystal

My heart saddens for the loss of my dear friend, my mentor and spiritual adviser. I have been offering prayers of peace for Diane and the entire Laidley family and beyond. You were the luckiest people I know to have had with such a loving, happy man to call Husband, Dad, POPs, and Uncle.
I am eternally Blessed to have had multiple levels of unforgettable personal time with David in my life. In the times we spent together socially or professionally, we laughed often, cried, joked all too often about the Scottish vs the Irish, and we prayed together primarily for peace in our own hearts and in the hearts of others suffering. I have never met a man who was so outside of himself and focused on the well-being of others. He was a great go-to guy when the chips appeared to be down. Dave's knack to bring the human spirit back to me within a few short moments of conversation was something that I could always count on when we talked.
David leaves us on earth as a living Disciple of Jesus Christ. We will read his bio one day in The Book of Saints as he so much presented himself as a strong mix of Thomas Merton and St. Paul. And to believe we had him as our own! He is the poster-child of how Faith and Fortitude are our most powerful sources of strength. Dave taught me and so many who crossed his path, that under any and all conditions dealt to us in life, we never ever abandon our loving God for direction and love will always prevail but, only on His terms.
Thomas Merton Prayer
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me.I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
As proud Chicago Lion rugby players though from different era's, Dave often poked about how the backs(me) got all the glory as the result of the grueling hard work of the forwards(he) in the scrum. And he was right! He took on life as a rugby match doing his part so that others would be happy and succeed. And that's what Disciples do.
David will never be gone in our lives because so many have formulated our own lives around his advise and actions. He is a gift of God in itself. A man of high integrity and self dignity. I will see David each day I look in the mirror as he has taught me so many nuances and dynamics of how to be a prayerful husband, father and a man. Though I am sad that I won't see him in Church or run into him around town, I am honored to have called David my friend and will continue to pass on his legacy until my last breath.
God Bless the Laidley's and the Graham's. You were Blessed to have one of God's finest gifts as your own. May Dave's soul and all the soul's of our faithful departed, through the mercy of an unconditional loving God, rest in eternal peace in Heaven.
Peace and Blessings,
Jimmy
