Obituary of Joe Groner

Joe Groner, 67, of Libertyville, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, December 17th at Condell Advocate Hospital due to complications from brain surgery. Joe lived an active and fulfilling life. Just out of high school, he was drafted to play minor league baseball for the Kansas City Athletics. He went on to attend the University of Kansas where he graduated with a degree in journalism, but more importantly, he met his wife Nancy, to whom he was married for 41 years. Joe began his career at Allstate Insurance Company and after 35 distinguished years with the company, he retired. He and Nancy raised their 3 daughters in Libertyville, where they were both active members of the community. One would often find Joe attending Mass at St. Joseph's Parish, golfing at Pine Meadow, exercising and socializing at the Centre Club and frequenting Mickey Finn's. Joe is survived by his adoring wife Nancy; his daughter Megan and husband Chris Potter, grandchildren Jack and Greta of Cedarburg, Wisconsin; daughter Melissa and husband Bob Sallmann, grandchildren Talia and Lilly of Libertyville; daughter Maggie and husband Josh Barta, granddaughter Meredith of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; and mother and father-in-law Bob and Nina Pennington of Grayslake. Joe will be fondly remembered by all for his depth of character, captivating storytelling, his witty sense of humor, his love of family and friends and his lively spirit. Visitation will be held Sunday December 22nd from 3-7 pm at the McMurrough Funeral Chapel, 101 Park Place, Libertyville (Rt. 176, 1 Block East of Milwaukee Ave.). A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday the 23rd at 10 am at St Joseph Catholic Church, 121 East Maple Ave., Libertyville. Interment following at Lakeside Cemetery, Libertyville.
