Dear Mike,
I had sent along a tribute before this book went online, so just adding thoughts and support to you at this difficult time.
What I had written earlier was the memory of staying over at the Libertyville "manse" and having great chats (and a bit of wine!) with Kathy as I recall you both had a favorite place that you frequented for happy hour.
Kathy was a lovely, kind, fun-loving soul who always had a cheerful word for anyone new (like me) who came into 'Gissing Life". We fondly referred to her as "The Veep" and she certainly enjoyed that role.
Fond memories keep us going at such times as these, And good friends, I consider myself lucky to be among them.
very sincerely
Brian Byrne

Kathy was truly a beautiful person inside and out. She had a sparkling personality, was a loving, caring and great wife, Mom and "Tootie". We have so many fun memories - all the family reunions, especially the ones where we all wore costumes, the surprise birthday party, all the home improvements we did in Illinois and Connecticut to name a few. We will miss her so much but are happy she is now in Gods loving arms. We hope she will give Steve a very big hug from us!

Dear Mike and Katie, our family send our love and condolences to you for your deep loss.
Over the last few days, we’ve been reflecting on the wonderful times we had with you and Kathy, and in particular the warmth and joy we experienced every time we met. We hold on to a vivid sense of the welcoming and hospitable world Kathy offered to us and all visitors to your home in Ridgefield, when we lived nearby.
Over the last few days, Louise and I have been reflecting on Kathy’s spirit in those years and one particularly raucous New Year’s Eve came to mind. Both of us can recall the shrieks of Kathy’s laughter, and visualize her standing in our kitchen, joking intensely with Louise’s late dad, Austin; two kindred souls from different worlds but with a shared spirit for celebration and humor.
We were always inspired by Kathy’s continued quiet strength and embrace of the world around her in the face of life’s challenges. There were very few times when we met up that our conversations did not (somehow) find a way on to the topic of sports, particularly the Wildcats. In these moments Kathy would literally bowl us over with her infectious passion and enthusiasm.
She was a caring and adoring mother, and we have no doubt she was the world’s best grandmother. I personally deeply appreciated her patience in putting up with all the time I distracted her husband with our crazy and demanding world of work, which translated into years of very early morning commuting departures and late nights home.
Mike, Kathy was a beautiful person who will always remain with us in our fond memories. We are here for you and send our love.

Mike and family, I wanted to offer my heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. Kathy (aka "the Veep") was such a lovely, warm woman who had an innate and deep sensitivity. It is more than a decade since you all hosted me at your Libertyville home in the days when I lived in Barcelona and came to Chicago on business.
Kathy is in God's hands and reunited with dear Steve, comparing sports scores perhaps, in that sense there is some comfort even though she passed out of this world much too soon into the next.
May God comfort you all at this time.
Sincerely,
Brian Byrne

We have been invited numerous times over the past 30 years to the Gissing cottage in Montello, WI. Always enjoyed ourselves. During our first visit Kathy and Mike beer steamed-BBQ'd brats for dinner. A Wisconsin staple. That evening there were a few brats left over. The next morning I suggested we use the remaining brats to make cheesy scrambled eggs with fried diced brats. Kathy was initially leary of the idea but agreed to try them. She loved them! Mike loved them! The kids loved them!
The ritual of brats for dinner followed by cheesy scrambled eggs with diced brats for breakfest became a constant. Every visit, Kathy would mention to me that she brought extra brats for our special breakfast. Such good memories. Kathy, we will miss you so!

Our hearts ache for you! Kathy was a beautiful person inside and out. She had a sparkling smile, was so loving, caring, creative and a GREAT wife and mom. We have so many fun memories - all the family reunions at Kilby Lake, especially the ones where everyone wore costumes, the surprise birthday party, the home improvement projects we did in Illinois and Connecticut to name a few. We miss her sooo much but are happy she is now at peace and with God.
All our love, Skip and Jan
