Obituary of Jean S. Smith
Jean S. Smith, age 94, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, September 19, at her home. She was born in Trevor/Salem, Wi, on March 29,1929, the daughter of the late Andrew and Margaret Semmelman. She was a lifelong resident of Lake County, II.
Predeceased by parents, Margaret and Andrew Semmelman, husband Gayl C. Smith, in 1992, and sister Barbara Douglas, in 2006. She returned to Salem, Wi. in Oct. 2021 where she spent her last years.
Survived by sons Bruce (Lois) of Tennessee, formally of Wisconsin, and Charles "Chip" (Christine) of Virginia, and daughter Polly (Harry) Meade of Wisconsin, multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Also leaves sister, Margaret (Peg) Benneyworth of Toronto, and brother Andrew (Bud) Semmelman of Lake Forest, and nieces and nephews.
Graduate of St. Joseph Grade School in Libertyville and graduate of a combination of Libertyville and Lake Forest High Schools. Long-time member of St. Joseph's parish. Served at Waukegan Soup Kitchen and worked with the Rosary makers. A Regular volunteer for funeral luncheons and other needed services.
Retired from Cook Memorial Library and was always an avid reader. Throughout the years traveled extensively: North & South America, Australia and South Pacific, and Europe and Africa. She was an avid golfer but, favorite the past time was always flower gardening.
She was a very hard worker and never complained while she made the best of any circumstances dealt to her throughout life. She had a great many friends and people enjoyed her company, laughter and willingness to help others. She will be dearly missed by many.
Jean was a person of character, intellect, and independence. She bravely battled cancer and lived in her own house for the first 92 years. She died in the comfort of friends and family.
A memorial Mass celebrating Jean's life will be held Wednesday October 4th, 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 121 E. Maple, Libertyville, II. 60048. Relatives and friends are welcome to meet with the family for Visitation, Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. until the Mass at the church. Private (family) internment will be held at Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville, II. on Thursday October 5th.
