Aunt Mickey
By: Her nephew Mark
Aunt Mickey was living at my home in Blackhawk Heights (now Clarendon Hills), Illinois when I was born and was my God Mother. She was going to Music College in Chicago and had her piano in our living room during the time she lived with us. I was too young to remember but luckily, she had told me numerous stories of those times during our many visits and phone conversations over the years.
Aunt Mickey and my mom, Kathleen (Kay) were very close and the last ten or fifteen years of my mom’s life, they spoke on the phone daily. Mom told me that they shared stories of the past, current events, as well as the status of each other’s children and grandchildren.
Towards the end of Aunt Mickey’s life, I made a point to call he often as I knew once she was gone, all four of the Engler sisters would reside only in our minds. So, with that, I looked forward to our conversations and even though she would repeat stories that I heard several times before, I always listened carefully – as if it was the first time heard it.
I will truly miss her and our conversations but have the belief that she is in a better place and wish her peace and love.

My Aunt Mickey
I feel so fortunate to have had such a special aunt – my mother Geraldine’s youngest sister. The four sisters in the family had an incredible bond, always sharing their cares and deep love for each other throughout their lives. Mickey was eternally grateful for her entire family. I was always so impressed with the extraordinary love she and Larry shared. She missed him, her sisters, and other loved ones so much; and had endless interesting stories about everyone. She especially would reminisce about her childhood years which were challenging in so many ways growing up during the Great Depression. Some very sad stories, and other stories so inspiring that they would bring tears of joy to my eyes. Stories of growing up in Atkinson, NE, and her family getting help from many aunts and uncles (her mother’s and father’s families both had seven siblings) most of whom lived in or around Atkinson and Stuart. Many touching stories about her sisters from childhood until later years! It was amazing to me how she had such an incredible memory! She would ask me if I remembered things from when I was a toddler – I didn’t, but she had memories from when she was an infant. I last saw her in May of 2022 when some of my family members and I visited her, Natalie, and Dieter at their homes. I will greatly miss her and the heartfelt visits we shared! Her legacy of music and love will live on in her family and friends. Jim Hollstein, nephew

My Aunt, ”Mickey” as she was always addressed by my family, will be remembered as a woman with a lifelong passion for Music and love of family and friends. I, who live in the world of art as well, brought me closer to my aunt in later years. She always spoke about Music as if music was family, which elevated her love for both. Her devotion to her husband, my mother’s brother was a beautiful statement of grace snd love. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are proof of that.
Having had a long and fruitful life of giving and sharing love in all directions, Mary Ellen’s soul shall be blessed with Eternal Peace.

I feel very fortunate for having met your Mom. She was a joy to be around.
I will always remember her kindness. My visits to her home with her son were memorable…and there were those runs for her favorite ice cream. The best part was sharing that treat with her and her son Chris.
You are forever in our kindest thoughts. ❤️
