Our sincerest condolences to Al, Marlie, Ross and all of Juli’s family and friends. I met Juli about 50 years ago at SU and I fell in love with her love of life and friends. We had so many good times together during our 4 years there. We kept in touch and saw each other at SU reunions every 5 years, except for the last one due to COVID. Juli hosted an SU reunion in Chicago in 2005. What a great time. Her goal was to make it to a Spring reunion at SU in 2023. My bet was that I would see her then. Juli faced so many challenges over the years and beat the ‘bastard’ for so long. Following a recent show about Paul Simon, we tearfully reminisced about how we did a circle dance to his music, especially “The Boxer” when in college. When I think of Juli I hear the line in The Boxer and “But the fighter still remains”. That was Juli. She went through so much but kept a smile on her face and a positive attitude. And, regardless of how Juli was feeling, she always asked how our family was doing. She was a true friend. She was loved by so many and will be missed very much.

I was lucky enough to know Juli my entire life. She was there to celebrate birthdays and holidays but it was the way she celebrated life's little moments that really stand out. Juli was always there checking in on everyone in her life, making you feel loved and cherished with her mix tapes, personalized gifts and little notes to show she cared. Nothing will replace the hole that is left by Juli's passing but her memory will live on in each of us!

We feel so lucky to have met Julie during a visit to Massachusetts for Christmas. She was such a bright and beautiful soul, and brought so much cheer to the room. She made us a Santa ornament for our Christmas tree, which we will forever cherish.
Our thoughts are with you all.
Sincerely,
Cody & Annie Mehrer

So many of our family memories include Juli. It was always hard to get a clear photo because she was always laughing or talking or just generally having too much fun to stop moving!
These photos include Christmas 2018, a visit with Emma, the "60s club" birthday celebration with Nancy, Katie's baby shower and a visit with friends in October 2022.

Juli was a incredible person and we were honored to be part of her life. As next door neighbors, we loved sharing stories in the front yard, listening to each others music in the backyard and gathering together during one of the many neighborhood gatherings. One of our favorite memories was watching Juli in her VW bug with a big smile on her face. Juli had courage, strength and determination to be there for her family and to experience as much as she could from life. She was an Energizer bunny - she just kept going despite all of the obstacles. Unfortunately, for all of us, especially Al, Marlie and Ross - and her extended family and friends, her batteries simply wore out. She will be in our hearts forever. She is an inspiration to us all.

Al, Marlie and Ross - How to sum up Juli's life and what she meant to all of us. Juli was the 'glue' and matriarch of our 'young women's cancer group. Since 1994, she, along with our beloved Andrea, made surviving cancer 'doable'. She was the one thing so incredibly positive that cancer gave to me. Sharing the ups, downs and milestones in our lives. Sam, Lindsay, Andy, Marlie, and Ross were about the same ages, so navigating having cancer while having little ones was a shared blessing. Julie always said that she was blessed even though her challenges mounted healthwise. Recently we talked about he eminent demise as very very sad but not tragic if we would have not gotten to see our kids grow up and become amazing adults. And Nolan, to see him, be with him, what a joy for her! To see both Ross and Marlie's weddings, was a true blessing! Al - I know that your life will have a huge hole in it, but know that she is up there sipping vodka with an amazing group of angels. Time helps us heal. Love you all, will miss our Juli, our rock, our friend, and my confidant. xoxoxxoox Rest in peace amazing lady. Love, Bonnie

I met Juli in 1994 at the Cancer Wellness Center when she began attending the "Young Women's" cancer support group that I was already a member of. During our weekly group sessions, we shared about difficulties post-surgery, struggles with chemo, etc. But we also had a lot of laughs and shared funny stories. Juli was one who could crack jokes and uplift our spirits. Humor and laughter were very healing and our group provided that for us as well as support and information sharing. I think it was December 1995 when Juli first hosted a holiday party for our group at her home. Her home was so festive and beautifully decorated for the holidays! Everyone brought a dish to share and wine was available. We each had a chance to share our life updates, stories (sad and happy) and enjoy hearty laughter as well. Juli continued hosting this holiday party annually through December 2019! Then Zoom took over for the next few years. I also fondly remember participating in American Cancer Society's Relay for Life with Juli who volunteered for this over a period of many years. I walked the track and lit candles in memory of friends and family members. Juli worked very hard at these yearly events. She was such a special woman who brought joy and friendship to so many people. She was so strong through her battles with cancer that she amazed me. No matter how difficult things were for her, she always asked "how are you".
I will miss her dearly and I will always have much love in my heart for her.

Q: How did you meet Julianne?
A: I met Juli at our first Cancer Wellness Session in Northbrook around 30 years ago. After our months of Northbrook sessions; our group of “Young Women” met at least yearly, usually at Juli’s & Al’s home in Libertyville around Christmas time. She was the most delightful, kind, fun loving woman. I will miss you Juli; and I hope you rest peacefully. My sincere condolences to her family and friends.
With so much love,

Juli loved and adored her family especially "Little Nolan" her precious grandson and nurse Stoshu. She had a terrific sense of humor when describing her unbelievable "journey" over the years. She always conveyed a strong and courageous attitude with all that was handed to her. She had a unique way with words and her deep voice was cool, calm and authoritative. Can't forget her needle works of art. As your Guardian Angel Juli will always watch over her family and friends, keeping them safe and sound.
God Bless You, Love you,
Michael (Brother-in-Law) and Linda

Juli was an extraordinary person who brought decades of friendship, humor, caring and fun into our lives...not to mention a vast cache of specially-mixed music CDs.....all with a theme or personal touch. We shared weddings, vacations and many visits over the years and she was always just a delight to spend time with. She was committed to her family, friends and charities and will be sorely missed. Throughout her own challenges she remained an indominable and positive spirit. We love you Jules!

I first met Juli went I took my daughter to move into college at Lake Forest. At the picnic they had for the families, we were seated at the same table with her and her son Ross. We started to talk and never stopped. I think everyone was a potential friend to Juli. At least, she made me feel that way. We learned we both worked in college administration offices. Several months later, my daughter and Ross when on a date. A few years later they graduated. And a few years after that they were married. Our grandson Nolan turned a year old in January. This chance meeting and it's turn of events has always been such a fond memory made so by a very special lady who shared her laughter and love of life with us on that warm August day in 2010. Our daughter's life and ours were forever changed by the warm embrace of the Pykelny family. You just never know who you might sit down next to at a picnic and how your life could change. A heartfelt thank you to Al, Marlie, Ross and Juli for your caring nature, funny jokes, and wonderful stories we have shared at your dining table. The matriarch of the Pykelny family was a strong and beautiful woman who fought a tough battle with such grace. You were very much loved Juli and will be very missed.

I have only very fond memories of Juli. She and I both drove east on hwy 176 every weekday morning on our way to work. She was headed to Lake Forest College and I was headed to Deer Path Middle School in Lake Forest.
Her cheerful smile and good morning wave from her yellow Volkswagon beetle got my days off to a great start !!
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

There was always plenty of engaging conversation and laughter when Juli was present. Visits by the P’s to Mrs. T’s (a.k.a. party central) included sitting at poolside, casual walks to the backyard woods for “joint” sessions and late night banter around the basement bar. I will never forget, two years ago, when I asked Juli to review my book draft. She continued to send me advice and insights while dealing with difficult health issues and invasive treatments. I will always remember her strength, perseverance and optimism. For me, Juli had the “magic touch”.
