I have had the pleasure of coaching alongside Jack Stanislaw for 20 years. Jack Stanislaw is the smartest man I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Not only was he smart but he had a way of explaining things so that everyone understood what he was saying. I had been a debater as a student but it wasn’t until I became an assistant coach under Jack Stanislaw that I started learning what it was to be a great debater. I was as much a student as the children were, soaking up every bit of knowledge that I could. Whether or not the team won was not the most important thing that could be accomplished at a tournament. Winning was nice but what was even more important was that the team did its best and that we debated honestly and with a respect for the truth. Jack helped me develop into a better teacher, coach, and human being.

To Susan and also Jack’s entire family - the memories and wonderful stories are going to be endless. Even now, I think Jack is saying - I really am here to stay folks. It’s all there for you. When you look at a stunning Slaw photo, a witty poem, a Renaissance painting, a golf result, another White Sox loss, a political debate - or a dopey comment from a public figure… we will hear Jack’s voice filled with insight as well as passion.
I, like many, was Jack’s friend, colleague, and golf buddy for many years. We go back decades in District 214 as we both coached debate teams and taught in the English Fine Arts Division at Hersey. Jack excelled in and out of the classroom at Wheeling and Hersey. He was honored with teaching awards and state debate championship trophies. While very competitive, he wasn’t motivated by awards. I’ve seen the happiness on his face when one of his students and/or debaters surpassed expectations. He was so proud of those kids. He would go on and on about them - about their potential. He never fished for personal congratulation.
This guy coached debate for 50 years! That’s only sustainable because he loved the students and was passionate about intelligent discourse. We often discussed how the debate students were better equipped with research and ethical standards than our political leaders and pundits.
You get to know a person even better while sharing a golf cart. Throughout many rounds of golf over the years, I learned to respect Jack even more. As we sometimes said, it’s not really about the golf -it’s about the interaction. He was well informed on everything. Yes, a Renaissance Man. More importantly, my deepest respect came as he would add a comment about an experience he shared with his family. Whether it was Susan, his children, or grandchildren - it was easy to read how much love and respect was there.
I was really looking forward again this summer to some time to banter with Jack. We will miss him and feel the grief. But as I noted earlier, he is definitely not going away. If at some point my friends think I’m talking to myself, it just might be Jack and I shaking our heads, chatting, and being frustrated at what we heard in the 2024 Presidential debates! I really can hear that Slaw voice… “Dennis, let me ask you this…” So here we go - another seminar. And I love it.
Thank you Jack for making a real difference - and for being one of a kind.

I had the great pleasure of working with Jack for 4 years at Wheeling High School, had his daughter Charmaine in class at Libertyville High School and then worked with his wife Sue at Vernon Hills. Jack was a "family first" man who was filled with love and laughter. I especially remember the countless stories Sue would share with me in regards to the nickname of "Mr. Make It Worse" when he tried to fix things around the house. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Stanislaw family. Jack was a great man and a role model for me during my early years of teaching. May God bless him.
